More Than Just Referrals: Why Networking Has Been Transformational for My Financial Planning Business – by Jessica Chantler, Quilter Financial Planner
When people talk about networking in the world of financial advice, the conversation often centres around one thing: referrals. And yes, referrals matter – they’re the lifeblood of many advisory businesses. But over time, I’ve come to realise that the true value of networking runs far deeper than simply passing business from one person to another.
For me, networking has become an essential part of not just growing my business, but sustaining it – mentally, emotionally, and professionally.
As a financial adviser, especially one running a solo business, the journey can sometimes feel isolating. You’re responsible for everything: your clients, your compliance, your growth, your reputation. The highs are rewarding, but the pressures are real. And that’s exactly where the right networking environment can make all the difference.
Finding More Than a Network
Joining the Piran Business Networking Group has been one of the most impactful decisions I’ve made in my career. What sets this group apart isn’t just the structure or the consistency – it’s the people.
This isn’t a room full of individuals simply waiting their turn to pitch. It’s a community of like-minded business owners who genuinely care about one another. Yes, we support each other professionally, but we also show up as people first.
There’s an understanding in the room that you don’t often find elsewhere. Everyone knows what it’s like to carry the weight of running your own business. The uncertainty, the responsibility, the constant need to adapt – it’s something you can’t fully appreciate unless you’ve lived it.
And because of that shared experience, the support goes far beyond referrals.
Support That Goes Beyond Business
Of course, the referrals are fantastic – and I say that without hesitation. My business has genuinely flourished thanks to the trust and advocacy of the group. Being surrounded by people who understand what you do, believe in how you do it, and are willing to recommend you with confidence is incredibly powerful.
But what’s even more valuable is the support that happens in between those referrals.
It’s the conversations before and after meetings. The encouragement when things feel challenging. The advice when you’re navigating a difficult situation. The shared wins, the honest discussions, and the sense that you’re not doing this alone.
That kind of environment is rare – and it’s something I don’t take for granted.
More Like Friends Than Contacts
Every two weeks, we meet for breakfast. On paper, it’s a networking meeting. In reality, it feels like catching up with friends.
There’s laughter, there’s openness, and there’s a genuine sense of connection. It’s a space where you can be yourself – not just your professional persona, but the person behind the business.
And that makes a difference. Because when relationships are built on trust and authenticity, the business naturally follows.
Referrals become more meaningful. Conversations become more productive. And the entire experience becomes something you look forward to, rather than something you feel obligated to attend.
Looking back, I can say with complete honesty that I wouldn’t be where I am today without this group.
The growth I’ve experienced – both in my business and in myself – has been shaped by the people around that table. Their support, their belief, and their willingness to champion what I do has played a huge role in where I am now.
Networking, when done right, isn’t just about growing your client base. It’s about building relationships that sustain you, challenge you, and help you move forward.
And sometimes, if you’re lucky, it feels a lot less like networking – and a lot more like belonging.
